Acupuncture Therapy

Acupuncture is a treatment that originated from traditional Chinese medicine more than 5,000 years ago. It is designed to help remedy pain, suffering, and other bodily ailments. By addressing your body’s internal energy flows, or qi (pronounced chee), acupuncture can help to alleviate swelling, reduce pain, and positively affect the function of your organs.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The traditional belief about acupuncture centers upon the idea that the entire body is filled with an energy flow, also known as qi. This qi flows through the channels of the body, known as meridians. When this energy is disrupted in any way from stress, pain, tension, or otherwise, the stimulation of the qi in certain areas can help restore energy flow and help the patient to experience relief.

While traditional beliefs about acupuncture still exist, a more Western belief system has been coupled with the Chinese traditional beliefs. In more Westernized treatments, it is believed that using small needles to stimulate certain parts of the body actually trigger neurohormonal pathways or nerve endings. When stimulated, these neural hormones can send signals to the brain to release endorphins, helping the patient to feel relief and euphoria.

How Our Acupuncturist Treats You

By utilizing sterile and extra-fine needles, our acupuncturist stimulates specific anatomical sites on your body that correspond to areas where your energy flow seems to be out of balance. By targeting these prescription points, our acupuncturist will help to treat deficiencies in that area and encourage your body to naturally cleanse or repair itself.

Our acupuncturist has found that the body is much like a body of water. When the body of water is flowing properly, it can cleanse itself of impurities and dams that have built up. Just like this body of water, when impurities, stresses, triggers, and other imbalances have built up in the body, they need to be cleansed so the body’s qi can begin to flow properly again and heal itself. Acupuncture helps your body to clear out those things that are keeping it from its optimal performance.

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

While it is very common to believe that acupuncture can help reduce swelling and relieve pain, it is also used to treat all parts of the body, including the internal organs. Our acupuncturist has successfully used acupuncture treatments to address the following:

How Many Acupuncture Treatments Will I Need?

We design our acupuncture treatment plans for each person based upon your individual needs. This means that there is no set number of treatments in order to balance your qi and remedy your struggles. During your initial appointment, which lasts between 60-90 minutes, our acupuncturist does a full health evaluation to discover what your main complaints are and also to determine areas that would benefit from acupuncture treatment.

Subsequent appointments last one hour. As your health evolves, your treatment evolves along with it. You may experience relief in the original area you came in to have treated, but discover that another area is in need of balancing. This is not uncommon as many ailments are connected to one another. Our goal is to find imbalances and treat all of the areas that are affected on and in your body.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

The word “needle” can often insight some amount of fear in many patients. Acupuncture needles are so small that you can fit 20-30 of them in the tip of a typical hypodermic needle. Their size is designed so they can reach your energy flows and nerve endings without being painful and so invasive that they would cause side effects. If you experience any pain at all, it is so minimal that you will forget that it exists and quickly allow yourself to relax into the treatment and experience the euphoria that comes from internal balance.

What Other Treatments Do You Offer?

At Lotus Studio Acupuncture, we treat your whole body. This means that acupuncture is combined with other treatments in order to maximize your results. Our acupuncturist is trained and certified to couple the following treatments with your acupuncture session and achieve the best-possible outcome:

  • Chinese herbs -- by prescribing herbs that will help to treat internal dysfunction in your body, you will experience an increase in balance and qi flow
  • Cupping -- including cupping with your acupuncture sessions helps us to remove stagnant blood and encourage healthy blood flow after acupuncture has helped to normalize your energy flow
  • Tui Na -- this is a form of traditional Chinese massage that works with acupuncture to help move energy, qi, and blood into the right areas of your body
  • Electrical stimulation -- by attaching electrical nodes to some of your acupuncture needles, our acupuncturist can help your acupuncture treatments to get deeper and help balance specific points in your body
  • Gua Sha -- this is ancient technique that is often used in combination with acupuncture to help the body release unhealthy tensions and to reduce blood stagnation
